About Sunk Loto
Australian metal pioneers Sunk Loto have just dropped their first new single and video since 2024’s God Complex, and the accompanying music video absolutely slaps.
If the name Sunk Loto doesn’t immediately make something stir in your chest, here’s a quick history lesson. Gold Coast, 1997. A group of teenagers sign to Sony Music Australia before most of their peers have figured out how to soundcheck properly. Two albums — Big Picture Lies in 2000, Between Birth and Death in 2003 — that between them helped define what Australian alternative metal looked and felt like in that era. Comparisons to Korn, Deftones, and Sevendust weren’t just lazy press copy; they were earned. Then 2007 rolled around and the transmission cuts out.
For fifteen years, nothing.
Then 2022 happens, and Sunk Loto come back like the gap never sold out. A sold out national tour came and was followed with a Between Birth and Death 20 year anniversary run in 2023. Singles The Gallows Wait and God Complex reminded everyone that the bones of this band were never going anywhere.
Which brings us here – to this article.
‘Dead Shadows’ – Single/Music Video
Dead Shadows is the first new material since God Complex, and it lands exactly where you’d want it to. Produced with Forrester Savell (the man behind records by Karnivool, Make Them Suffer, and Animals As Leaders) and engineered by Luke Palmer (Dead Letter Circus, Boo Seeka). The track is tight, heavy, and carries that particular kind of intensity that only shows up when a band is genuinely locked in rather than just going through motions.
The band put it plainly:
“Dead Shadows felt like the right first single after a few years away, it sits right in that space between where we’ve come from and where we’re heading, and it really lets Jas’ vocals shine.”
Hard to argue with framing like that.
Who’s in the Room
The current lineup — Jason Brown on vocals and guitar, Dane Brown on drums, Sean Van Gennip on bass — now has lead guitarist Rohan Stevenson in the fold, and Dead Shadows makes a pretty solid case that this configuration has teeth.
“We’re looking forward to sharing some new music after 30 years as a band.”
Understated, but the music does the rest of the talking.
