Melbourne’s alt-rock four-piece get heavier, glitzier and a little disco on their first EP.

Melbourne alt-rock four-piece Excuse For An Exit have announced their debut EP, Glitter & Grief, out Friday 11 December. To mark the announcement, they’ve dropped the new single “Black Cat Superstar”, which is out everywhere now. It’s a love letter to your mates, and you’ll be humming it by lunchtime.

The EP was produced, mixed and mastered by Chris Lalic (Windwaker, Headwreck, RinRin). It builds on the band’s emo-rock roots in two directions at once. Some of it is the heaviest material they’ve written. Some of it goes somewhere else entirely, with electronic flourishes, sugary pop and disco-rock hooks. Across six tracks, it covers the highs and lows of life, from wild nights out to heartbreak, friendships that ended and new beginnings nobody saw coming.

Vocalist Edelle explained where the title came from:

“The idea of Glitter & Grief grew from the healing process itself. Like glitter, grief never quite disappears. It fades, but little remnants are always there. Some days you notice them more than others. Still, even in its persistence, there’s something beautiful about it, and eventually, you learn to live with it, and even wear it.”

“The songs embody this vast array of emotions, from soaring highs to searing lows. Creating this EP over several months reminded us of the ever-changing nature of life, and how you can never quite predict what’s to come. So don’t write yourself off just yet.”

About “Black Cat Superstar”

Black Cat Superstar is track three of six. It’s a big dose of appreciation for the people in your life who need reminding of how incredible they are. Excuse for an Exit had this to say:

“Black Cat Superstar encapsulates that feeling you get when watching your friend absolutely killing it. After a song like ‘hate me like I do’, Edelle wanted to remind Elise that she really is all that. The song is an appreciation for all the hard-working, risk-taking, trail-blazing black cats out there. We see you xx”

Who Are Excuse For An Exit?

Since forming in 2020, Excuse For An Exit have built an inclusive alternative community in their local scene. You can see that community in the music video for “ur villain”, which features their fans. Those fans have followed the band as they’ve moved further into electronic territory without dropping the emo-rock they started with.

The band have also put their time into causes that matter. They played the inaugural Siren Sounds, an all femme-fronted and LGBTQI+ mini-festival raising funds for The Red Heart Campaign. They also ran their own Lifeline fundraiser, handling the management, running and performing for two shows that raised $1,500 for charity.
