Just what the hell is Underworld?

Underworld is a dark fantasy/horror series with elements of science fiction and a strong grounding in action and gore. It follows the war between Vampires and Werewolves (or Lycans, for the uninitiated). The series first appeared on our screens with Underworld (2003), then Underworld Evolution (2006), and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), which is the prequel to the series, chronicling the origins of the Vampire-Lycan war. The fourth film, Underworld Awakening (2012), is the sequel to Underworld: Evolution.

Then finally, Underworld: Bloody Wars (2016) closed out the franchise. The main focus of the final film was Selene, the protagonist, who throughout her journey gains allies as well as enemies. And, in a way, it tries to return to its core-roots that made the original so wildly successful. Her daughter is absent, the love of her life is dead, and she is being pursued by the remaining vampires that she betrayed. With vampires and werewolves closing in on her, she goes through an adventure that is as rooted in supernatural horror and technology as the original film.

So without further ado, let’s get stuck in to the top 15 Underworld characters – ranked from worst to best. Filled with Vampires and Werewolves alike.

15. Sonja

Sonja is a character that appeared in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. She was the first daughter of Viktor, a vampire elder. Her love affair with Lucian (a Lycan slave, and the first Lycan that can quickly change from human to wolf form) was a catalyst for the war between the Lycans and Vampires. Made easy for Lucian when Viktor burned Sonja alive right in front of him.

14. Viktor

Viktor is a ruthless vampire who was turned by Markus Corvinus in the early 5th century. As a ruthless elder and dictator, he was feared, and was never afraid to manipulate others into following him. One example of his manipulation was when he killed Selene’s family and sired her. He also trained Selene to be a Death Dealer after lying to her about how Lycans killed her parents. When Selene discovered the truth, however, she killed Viktor with a swift stroke of the blade.

13. Quint Lane

Quint Lane is a super-enhanced Lycan and the son of Dr. Jacob Lane. However, he is an enhanced werewolf due to regular injections from the Corvinus strain (we’ll talk about that later). Evidenced by his ability to heal fast and an immunity to silver. Quint is one of the only werewolves that Selene couldn’t beat in a combat. Making him a brutal killing machine.

12. William Corvinus

William Corvinus is a member of the Corvinus clan and a brother to Markus Corvinus (who we’ll talk about next). He was also the antagonist in Underworld: Evolution and the ancestor of the Underworld werewolves. He is extremely strong and possesses superhuman-like abilities, even by Werewolf standards. A fact that reigns true when he easily kills multiple Death Dealer vampires at the time of his capture.

11. Markus Corvinus

Markus Corvinus was the first vampire and one of the sons of Helena and Alexander Corvinus. He was the progenitor of the vampire species and a brother to William (the first werewolf). Markus was bitten by a bat, while William was bitten by a wolf, turning them into the first of their kind. This event tore the Corvinus family apart. William’s new form caused him to infect lots of people. Markus created Viktor, hoping to contain William and make him a hybrid, but Michael killed him.

10. Marius

Marius is a badass Lycan leader and villain. He was also an antagonist in Underworld: Blood Wars. He was responsible for killing Michael and taking his blood to empower himself. He almost killed Selene.

9. Thomas

David’s father, Thomas, is a vampire elder who is still in existence. He has no faith in Selene and openly despises her hybrid offspring. Selene saving his son causes a little shift. David is the coven’s de facto leader even though Thomas is an Elder.

8. Semira

Semira is an ambitious vampire who appears in Underworld: Blood Wars. As one of the leaders of the Eastern Coven, she was ready to kill anyone who got in her way to the top of the coven. She is responsible for killing Thomas.

7. Lena

Lena is a vampire warrior from the Nordic Coven and one of Vidar’s offspring. Lena is equally cool and eccentric. She does, however, demonstrate her skill as a fighter by slaying a number of Lycans with her sword, shield, and strange superspeed powers. Even Selene, who had been beaten by Marius, was saved by her from certain death.

6. Singe

Singe is a researcher hired by Lucian to figure out how to combine the werewolf and vampire lineages to produce hybrids. In order to test whether blood from the human Corvinus bloodline and blood from vampires and Lycans are compatible, he kidnaps members of the Corvinus bloodline. When Michael Corvin is captured and brought to him for testing, he ultimately finds Michael Corvin to be compatible. Viktor kills him near the conclusion of the Underworld. His blood is responsible for reawakening Markus when the drain connected to Markus’ tomb is filled with the stuff.

Unlike other members of Lucian’s clan, Singe can’t change into his werewolf form, but he still has the werewolf trait. That and he’s a thoroughly distasteful character filled with mad scientist qualities. Meaning I’ve yet to see anyone online or in conversations feel sad when he meets his timely end.

5. Raze

In the films Underworld and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, the character Raze is a Lycan (werewolf). He’s an absolutely beast – whether he’s in Lycan or human form with bellowing bass voice that’ll give you goosebumps. He serves as the second in charge of the Lycans and he’s Lucian’s right-hand man.

4. Lucian

In the films Underworld, Underworld: Evolution, and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Lucian is a Lycan. He was the primary character in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and an antagonist in Underworld. When we first meet him in the franchise he’s introduced as the founder and head of the Lycan resistance.

3. David

David is the pure-born son of Thomas, the elder of one of the remaining Vampire Covens, and the Vampire Elder Amelia (deceased by the time we meet both of them). David is incredibly powerful, capable of engaging fully converted Lycans in hand-to-hand combat, and his strength is increased beyond that of the original Elders when he is turned into an augmented vampire. Along with Selene and Lena, he is one of the strongest vampires in the franchise.

2. Michael Corvin

A typical guy getting thrown into a supernatural struggle who learns there’s something special about him along the way. As it turns out, Michael is the first Vampire/Lycan hybrid in a long time, and he’s also the last of a long-extinct bloodline. He is more powerful and a hell-of-a-lot quicker than any Lycan or vampire. Not to add that he is the first and only male to win Selene over, fathering her daughter Eve. Does he make it to the franchise? No. Am I going to tell you which movie he dies in? Also, no.

1. Selene

Selene is a vampire whose primary mission, as a Death Dealer, is to kills Lycans (Werewolves). A mission born out of vengence thanks to a group of Lycans who killed her family. The sexiest and baddest vampire in movie history is Selene. But what sets her apart is how she grows as a person. She initially has a limited personality, but with each film, a fresher dimension gets added to her persona.
